MIRACLES OF LIFE AT THE BEGINNING OF 2014 WITH FAIRY BRIGHT REVIEWS

LIFE IS A MIRACLE by Chris Hertz- Singer, Songwriter, Musician

Jan. 1, 2014-( I opened up my email  and received this divine review. What a way to start a brand new year!! 2014, looks like a remarkable year.)

Wow, what a beautiful job you did with Fairy Bright. I was so impressed with your writing and illustrations that I never finished the book till after midnight. Your description of the foal was so accurate I was wondering where you observed that process. You were right on the money. And then how you gave a life to Fairy Berry not ever knowing her (it was such a positive, purposeful life).
The writing of the story was absolutely superb and the book flowed smoothly. You have to feel real good, I’m proud. Now where are you going to find the next one. I know you will. Thank you so much for the wonderful Christmas present that I will cherish. ( Don B.)

and thenReview of Broken Stone by n. k. hertz
N.K. Hertz is a talented new writer addressing eternal themes in a unique way. Underlying her part parable, part history, part fiction with spiritual, Christian and magical overtones woven together with a light touch are the eternal questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is love?
The story was triggered by the discovery of a broken headstone in a cemetery by a Steffen, while having his lunch. It was the pauper’s grave of Fairy Bright Gordon who died in 1934 after a short life.
The novel has clear roots in the southern tradition. It is full of lush descriptions with the heady perfumes and beautiful colours of North Carolina. Birds play a role including the humming bird but most importantly the flashing red cardinal, traditional emissaries of spirit. Fairy bright refers to the humming birds at one point as ‘My beloved fairies in disguise’.
She is very much a child of nature and narrates part of the novel. From her permanent place of rest in the potters field far from the fancy graves of the important people of her town. Yet even there she is graced by the presence of a magnificent dogwood dropping blossom on her broken headstone.
She observes the man on the day that he discovers her grave and picks up on a beautiful song that seems to appear from nowhere. As he contemplates the headstone she makes the decision to tell her story to him. Steffen is a man in crisis in his own life and this is described in detail. He is drawn by the music to begin to feel empowered and resume his passion for music, yet is haunted by the story of Fairy Bright Gordon.
As their stories unfold another player enters, Seta, a young disabled woman from Afghanistan with an American mother and a Sufi master father and a highly evolved level of spirituality. She meets Steffen on an airplane, connects deeply with him and passes him a gift.
About one third of the way into the book Fairy Bright’s story is introduced, itself with spiritual overtones from her moment of birth in 1917. She is a pure being graced with a connection to the fairy worlds, animals and nature, yet the circumstances of her birth result in a challenging life as the child of a widow living on a plantation. Her story is beautifully told from the magic of her childhood to the gradual unfolding of the reality of her vulnerability as her gifts were exploited by the powerful landowner Reynolds Hatcher.
There are surprises, twists and turns in the plot that allow magic to continue to be woven as the interconnection of character’s lives becomes revealed. We know of course that Fairy Bright died young but the suspense of how and why is well maintained. As the book continues further twists in the plot introduce more transforming spiritual themes including near death experience, reincarnation and the power of Love. Highly recommended. And don’t forget the music that accompanies the book! ( Patty Star)
